Red Fox: A Spin-off (initially called True and Fake Red Fox) is a teaser short story for the longer comic Red Fox. Set during the chaotic late Ming dynasty, a villain impersonates the righteous thief Red Fox, stealing from and killing a wealthy family of officials. The White-haired Lion King is tasked with capturing Red Fox. As the investigation unfolds, the truth proves to be quite complex. In the end, the “real Red Fox,” who never makes a physical appearance, captures the impostor and presents him as a gift to the diligent White-haired Lion King, then vanishes without a trace. The identity of Red Fox and the comic itself remain as a mysterious legend of the martial world.
A few completed pages of the work were published in the comic magazine High. In 1997, Tong Li Publishing’s editors took the magazine to the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France, where Red Fox impressed European comic publishers and made a strong impression.
