In 1989, The Legend of Yi-Dow was serialized in the comic magazine Sunday. It tells the story of street punk Chen Yi-Dow from Taipei and the late Ming dynasty hero Chen Yi-Dow, who travel through time and swap identities. By adopting a dual narrative that combines settings of “historical research of ancient times” with “realistic depiction of the contemporary times,” The Legend of Yi-Dow, given its scope, presents a significant challenge to the comic artist’s overall skills. The opening scenes of martial arts were Chen Hung-Yao’s counteraction to longstanding comic censorship, using raw, brutal physical blows to break through the limiting framework.
