Landscape after Guo Xi

Zhen Ming

Zhen Ming has been teaching art at Chiayi Normal University since 1959. His landscape ink painting style is strongly influenced by the styles of Li Cheng and Guo Xi, alongside the literati styles of the Yuan and Ming periods, to form a distinctive style of his own. This painting is modeled on the brushwork of Guo Heyang (Guo Xi), with typical elements such as crab-clawed trees, clustered rocks and a wide composition which, together with the Yuan style of ''a river separating two shores, ''makes the painting particularly vast and esoteric. The inscription on the painting indicates that it was painted during the Chiayi Normal University period, an important achievement in the creation and promotion of ink and wash painting at that time.
