Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Collective Memory of First-Generation Readers
Between 1994 and 1995, Chen Hung-Yao designed the book cover art for the traditional Chinese edition of Tanaka Yoshiki’s novel series, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, published by Sharp Point Press. Chen’s covers helped visualize the characters for readers across Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and China in the 1990s. The character Reinhard von Lohengramm, the leader of the Galactic Empire in the story, was modeled after Hollywood star Sharon Stone. Meanwhile, film critic Ban Pin Chu in 2021 compared the appearance of the protagonist, Julian Mintz, to Timothée Chalamet during the release of the Hollywood sci-fi epic, Dune. Trained through serialization in comic magazines, Chen skillfully connected stars and the market.
