The Right Wing — Chen HungYao: Creative Journey

2001-2003 - Illustrated the book jackets and created illustrations for Yuan Zhe-Sheng’s Ni Yada series (4 volumes), marking the beginning of a long-term collaboration with Aquarius Publishing. 2002 - Illustrated the book jacket for the Chinese edition of In the Pond by Ha Jin. 2003 - Illustrated the book jacket and created the illustrations for An Arhat Pond by Yuan Zhe-Sheng. 2003 - Illustrated the book jacket and created the illustrations for Flies’ Love Letters by Chen Yao-Hua. 2003 - Illustrated the book jacket for the Chinese edition of Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. 2003 - Illustrated the book jacket for the Chinese edition of Italian Folktales by Italo Calvino. 2006 - Got married. 2007 - Founded “Airman Studio.” 2008 - Designed the character “FABO” for Talking Island’s online learning game. 2008 - Served as the storyboard director and art designer for the permanent film Digital and Family at the Digital Home Experience Hall of Guangzhou Science Center. 2009 - Designed the themed poster for Discovery Channel’s feature film, Unknown Taiwan. 2009/10 - Birth of elder son, Chen I-Chou. 2010 - Participated in the independent comic magazine, Taiwan Comix (TX). 2011 - Attended the Angoulême International Comics Festival with TX members at own expense and represented the Government Information Office, Executive Yuan, to set up a booth, sparking interest in Taiwanese comics within the European comic scene and prompting the Ministry of Culture to allocate annual funding for sending Taiwanese comic artists to participate in international comic exhibitions. 2011 - Independently published the sci-fi comic Time Trick. 2011 - Invited as a guest artist to the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France. 2012 - The Airman Studio was commissioned to organize Taiwan Week at the Pompidou Center in France. 2012/08 - Birth of elder daughter, Chen I-Fan. 2013 - Self-published the comic script of World Cup China in 1026. 2013 - Invited as a guest artist to the Brussels Comic Strip Festival. 2014 - Invited as a guest artist to the Algeria International Festival of Comics. 2015 - Signed an international commission contract to create comics with Glénat, a major Belgium-based, French-language comic publisher. 2015/08/27 - Chen Hung-Yao passed away. 2018 - Westward Odyssey, held at Taipei Public Library Qiming Branch, introduces Chen Hung-Yao’s works through braille and installations. 2019 - The 30th anniversary edition of The Legend of Yi-Tao was published by Baksik Publishing. 2025/08/05-2025/08/24 - First solo exhibition Beyond Limits – The Art of Chen Hung-Yao, held at Taiwan Comic Base. 2025/12-05 - 2026/03/29 - Commemorative exhibition Timeless.Limitless.Chen Hung-Yao, held at the former Preparatory Office of the National Taiwan Museum of Comics.
