Wooden masks carved into old bread paddles used for placing bread into the oven are inspired by tradi t ional wintertime masks. All rituals of this period are solemn and mystical: winter masks evoke the atmo sphere of the quiet anticipation of spring, and their meaning often lies in prohibitions and threats. These mysterious figures, which have always managed to stir the silent and contemplative mood of Advent, have their origins in the pre-Christian era.
