Due to increasing numbers of students at Shou Shan Buddhist College, Venerable Master purchased a sloped land at Bamboo Garden Lodge, Dashu Township, for the expansion of the temple and Buddhist College, thereby starting the blueprint of Fo Guang Shan. As he could not afford to hire an architect, Venerable Master picked up a bamboo stick and drew his ideas on the ground. In the following year, Eastern Buddhist College was completed and then renamed Fo Guang Shan Tsung-Lin University, the first Buddhist university in Taiwan.

Age 41|The Land of Fo Guang Shan was Purchased by National Master Yu Lin!
Venerable Master’s novel National Master Yu Lin has been a long-selling book. When the decision was made to expand Shou Shan Buddhist College due to the lack of space, Venerable Master used the royalty of his novel to buy the land where FGS Bamboo Garden Lodge is currently located. Therefore, he often jokingly said, “The land of Fo Guang Shan was literally purchased by National Master Yu Lin!”
