A Pioneer Who Creates Wondroud Existence Out of Emptiness - Benefiting Society Through Philanthropy

Kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity are the four pillars of the bodhisattva spirit to universally liberate sentient beings, and spread joy in the world. Buddhism emphasizes suffering for the purpose of helping us to understand the truth of suffering, to attain liberation from suffering, and to discover true joy. According to the Dharma, joy is a kind of inner perfect ease, peace and happiness experienced from the joy found from the Dharma, in Chan, and the Truth. The philanthropic endeavors by Fo Guang Shan are based on such spirits of Humanistic Buddhism: kindness, compassion, joy, equanimity; and benefiting others. With this basis, Fo Guang Shan aims to liberate beings from suffering, bring them joy, and to provide boundless spiritual and physical care instead of merely providing monetary or material aids. Instead, elements of culture, education, and spiritual cultivation are integrated into such works to help people rid themselves of greed, hatred, and ignorance, and to purify society. Some of Fo Guang Shan's philanthropic organizations include: Da Ci Children's Home, Dharma programs for prison inmates, Lanyang Care Center, and Longevity Memorial Park.
