Auspicious Light

Peng, Kun-yen

[“Forestry Agency Director General’s Award” at the 19th Exhibition of Lacquer Art of 2011 in Japan] Material: Natural raw lacquer, pigment of mineral paint, pure gold leaf, colored foil, shell Size: 59.3x39x40cm The creation method of building up thick lacquer to shape is a relatively uncommon lacquer art practice in Taiwan. Besides being labor-intensive and time-consuming, due to the fact of lack of substrates to attach to, it relies on the operation of a stronger sense of form, which further increases the uncertainty of the creative process. The time taken to build up layer upon layer on the area that grows by one centimeter each day and the resulting thickness of the work serve as a testament to the artist’s perseverance and dedication. The artist is the first foreigner to receive the “Forestry Agency Director-General’s Award of the” at Japan’s “Exhibition of Lacquer Art”.
