[Minister of Council for Cultural Affairs Prize - the 3rd Taiwan Craft and Design Competition in 1995] Material: Wood Size: 49x41x28.5cm A work that joins wooden leftovers in precision to achieve a three-dimensional, wonderful beauty and an air of noble elegance. It carries the image of “abundant blessings” by way of the feature of an auspicious cloud pattern composed of two graceful ellipses as its base and the design extends upward. The curve of the work, from the base to the rim, showcases meticulous craftsmanship, with the contrast and gradual color transitions of natural hues in the wood employed throughout the bowl that lend the work a sense of elegance. The bowl is crafted by arranging and laminating layer upon layer of wood with precise calculation, where in each layer upon another, thought must be given to the variation in patterns, the seamless alignment of the curved joints, and the fabricating skills required to render the evolving curves of the bowl. The artist’s consummate key lies in how to accurately capture, from the rough blanks of various rhombic polygonal shapes, the elegant and ideal curves intended by the designer.
