Variation in Landscape

Lee Chen-Lin

[First Prize – Category of Artistic Crafts - the 2015 Taiwan Craft Competition] Material: Cotton, Spandex yarn Size: 800x106cm Variation stems from free-spirited display based on both deep knowledge and application of repetitive elements. Landscape painting is not just depiction of scenery; it further incorporates spiritual insights from diverse perspectives, reflecting contemporary humanistic thought. Brocade paintings, also known as “scenic textiles”, differ from layered oil paintings in that the artist employed specialized layered design patterns with computerized jacquard weaving technology. The use of such woven structure with design module to achieve the effect of simulating a wide range of colors with just a few resulted in infinite variations in the color weaving of these scenic textiles. The fabric’s unique microscopic three-dimensional space further accommodates the passage of time within the picture. Inspired by the landscapes of Taroko in Hualien, the artist’s hometown, this 800cm-long handwoven tapestry is presented in the form of a scroll. With a presentation of colors reminiscent of Impressionist paintings, the work, which captures the space, lines, tones, light, and shadows of the hometown landscape, embodies both the profoundness of traditional wash drawing and the rhythm of Western painting.
