Chiu-Hwa Wang

Architect Chiu-Hwa Wang was a member of Taiwan's first generation of female architects and the first woman to receive a National Award for Arts for architecture. She completed her architectural education in the United States and worked at the New York studio of American architect Percival Goodman, where she eventually became a partner. After returning to Taiwan in 1979, she designed multiple libraries, earning the title "Mother of Taiwan's Libraries."
Architect Wang believed that architecture ultimately concerns the relationship between people and their environment. Facing a site beside the Sifen River, she elevated the ground floor to prevent flooding, creating a sense of floating modernity. To respond to the physical climate, the building employs double-layer roofing and double-layer walls for heat reduction. The west-facing research room exterior wall rotates 30 degrees toward the northwest to create study compartments that block the intense western sun while allowing natural light in. The interior space requirements are faithfully reflected in the building mass, creating a staggered design with varying heights.
In terms of spatial layout, the main entrance is positioned off-center. The east houses the library, the west contains offices and research spaces, the south provides service spaces and the central is the large lecture hall. All functions are arranged courtyard-style with clear spatial organization. The interior's sugarcane board ceiling and timber floors have been preserved from the original construction and remain excellently maintained after 50 years.
