Bring Old Furniture Back to Life

Seabelongings

Old and broken chairs, lamps, or closets often discarded on the streets are seen as eyesores. However, in Yilan, Seabelongings draws inspiration from the concept of “Bring Old Furniture Back to Life”, encouraging the public to rediscover these forgotten pieces. Through outdoor learning, forums, workshops, and exhibitions, the project has created a learning pathway that transforms discarded furniture into a medium for sustainability education and urban aesthetics. This project begins with outdoor learning. The team guides participants to Datong District in Taipei to explore and record the stories behind discarded furniture and understand why it was abandoned. Later, a forum called “You Throw, I Pick Up” is held, where participants share their stories and experiences to show the public that waste can be given new life with a fresh perspective. During the workshop, waste materials are given new life through creativity and craftsmanship. For example, the Fishnet Lamp is made from an electric fan cover and yarn dyed with Dioscorea cirrhosa; recycled paper sea turtles are created from dyed fibers and reused pulp; and old furniture is repaired and restored with new function and value. These hands-on processes allow participants to experience firsthand that being discarded is not the end of an object’s life. The project culminates in the Reborn Exhibition of Waste Furniture, which offers a “Barter” experience and cross-functional collaboration. Through this, the renewed furniture is returned to the community, allowing the recycled pieces to be used again and again. Through these events, Seabelongings shows the power of sustainability education: from exploring the environment to hands-on practice, from repair exhibitions to daily use. The rebirth of old furniture not only gives new life to objects but also encourages people to rethink their connection with things and bring sustainability into everyday life.
