C - no. 4 Unstable Time C - no.4

Tatsuo MIYAJIMA

近年主要個展「Connect with Everything」(雪梨現代美術館、2016 年)、「Unfinished: Thoughts Left Visible」(The MET Breuer/ 紐約、2016 年)、「Being Coming」( 民生現代美術館/ 上海、2019)、 「Sky of Time」(Espoo Museum of Modern Art, EMMA/ 芬蘭、2019)等。 Work Statement: Since the 1980s, Miyajima has used digital LED garget counters that display numbers from 1 to 9 to create works based on three concepts: “It keep changing”, “It connects with everything”, and “It continues forever,” garnering global attention. After the counters finish counting from 1 to 9, they do not display “0”; instead, they turn black to symbolize death. The counters calculate and display the number of new lives, suggesting the ever-lasting cycle of life. In this exhibition, his three works show the theme of life and death. With counters sewn onto a piece of fabric in a circle, Unstable Time C - no.4 can freely form all kinds of shapes, revealing the fluidity of the universe. Inspired by the flying apsaras depicted on the walls of Mogao Cave in Dunhuang, China, the configuration and combination of HITEN - no.4 can be randomly changed as an attempt to introduce uncertain elements to the work. On the other hand, the Life (le corps sans organes) - no.18 series produced in collaboration with artificial life researchers consists of digital counters embedded with a program that autonomously generates changes in response to surrounding environment and situation; although these are artificial objects, they are capable of changing with the environment on their own, reminding people of life forms with self-discipline. Biography: Born 1957 in Tokyo, Japan, and currently based in Ibaraki, Japan. Completed postgraduate studies at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1986, Miyajima was invited to the “43rd Venice Biennale: Aperto '88” (1988, Venice), with his works using digital numbers, which has received international acclaim. Since then, he has developed numerous public projects and exhibitions beyond the confines of the country. His recent solo shows include: “Being Coming”(Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai, 2019), ”Sky of Time” (Espoo Museum of Modern Art, EMMA, Finland, 2019), “Connect with Everything” (Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, 2016), “Unfinished: Thoughts Left Visible” (The MET Breuer/ New York, 2016). He was selected as one of the artists within “STARS: Six Contemporary Artists from Japan to the World” at Mori Art Museum. Photographer: Anpis Wang.
