"For everything I create, the most important thing is this: I want to be my own first audience."
Founded in 2018, ZhēnZhēn Stained Glass Lab unveiled its special exhibition “Relight+NOISE: Until I Approach Infinite Transparency” in 2022. Among the featured works, the video piece “Relight+NOISE” broke away from the physicality of stained-glass craftsmanship, introducing a new dimension of "seeing glass" alongside the auditory experience of "hearing glass." By using traditional stained-glass windows, it created an immersive sensory experience, presenting a way to "read" the interplay of white noise and light.
Artist Chang Po-Chieh employed the focus and defocus capabilities of a camera to generate dreamlike visual effects from the way traditional glass patterns react to light. The imagery dances between clarity and blurriness, continually shifting in and out of focus. This is paired with the sounds of a vinyl record needle scraping across the textured glass patterns, as if imbuing the vintage stained-glass windows with their own voices and scenery. These rhythmic and wave-like sounds echo white noise, reflecting Chang’s meditative experience during his prolonged work with stained glass. The repetitive and rhythmic nature of the craft leads to a state of flow—an almost blank consciousness—that provides both stability and a therapeutic energy for the artist.

Born in 1986, Chang Po-Chieh is the founder of ZhēnZhēn Stained Glass Lab. With a background in architecture and new media art, he discovered the traditional craft of stained glass while exploring contemporary art. Fascinated by this age-old technique, he apprenticed under experienced artisans and devoted countless hours to refining his skills. Through the repetitive handcrafting processes, Chang found both healing and solace.
Chang’s work breathes new life into early Taiwanese stained glass by blending it with modern design and functionality. He is best known for his stained glass lighting fixtures but has also expanded his creations to include jewelry, home decor, and innovative cross-disciplinary projects. During his residency at the National Taichung Theater, he developed Relight+Live Dream Walk, an acclaimed installation. Another standout piece, Relight+NOISE, combines mesmerizing light and glass effects with the unique sound produced by a vinyl stylus tracing etched patterns. This harmonious blend of sight and sound poetically captures the therapeutic and meditative essence of his craft.
