Yen Yi-Tzu/Collaboration Between Mom and Son

"In a way, my creations are quite simple, like writing a diary." During her university years, artisan Yen Yi-Tzu gained extensive experience in ceramic creation. Later, while pursuing a master’s degree in the Netherlands, she expressed herself through performance art and theater. After becoming a mother, Yen experienced a profound shift in her life. Following the birth of her two sons, she sought to reclaim her sense of self and balance the fear of losing her identity as an artist. Her tender and genuine experiences of nurturing infants and young children brought back memories of the "directness" and "tactility" she felt when working with ceramics in college. This realization led her to start minimalistic creative projects from her living room, beginning with underglaze-painted ceramic plates and vessels. As artistic creation became a common part of family life, Yen’s sons were inspired to pick up their pens and draw. They asked if their whimsical doodles could be used as designs. Yen incorporated her children's drawings into her ceramic works, blending creativity with experimentation. This collaboration preserved her children’s unique interpretations of the world on ceramic vessels and sparked the creation of the brand " Collaboration Between Mom and Son" Together with her children, Yen crafted ceramics that opened a playful and creative path for everyday pottery, offering a unique solution to balancing her roles as both mother and artist. The insects featured on her ceramic vases originate from her children’s everyday doodles. Yen Yi-tzu/Collaboration Between Mom and Son 「小孩畫畫媽媽制器」的媽媽,同時也是陶藝創作者顏亦慈,1984年生,前者與目前就讀小學六年級與小學 三年級的兩位兒子共同創作,後者為個人品牌。 "Collaboration Between Mom and Son" is an artistic project led by Yen Yi-tzu, a ceramic artist born in 1984. Yen collaborates with her two sons, who are currently in grades six and three, while maintaining her individual brand. Having been introduced to ceramics and various craft materials during her university years, Yen built a solid foundation in ceramic techniques. Her education in the Netherlands further expanded her creative perspective through performance and installation art. After becoming a mother, Yen felt a sharp contrast between her roles and returned to ceramics as a means of reconnecting with the raw, tactile nature of materials. When her sons’ creative expressions blossomed at age five, their question, "Why doesn’t Mom make my drawings?" inspired her to incorporate their doodles into ceramic designs, enhancing them with glazes. This approach is evident in her piece Insect Vase, capturing her children’s interpretations of the world through ceramic artistry. Yen frequently participates in crafts markets and holds exhibitions, navigating her dual identities under both "Collaboration Between Mom and Son" and her personal brand, "Yen Yit-zu"
