Tzu Ai Kindergarden

Tzu AI Kindergarten, established under Yilan Buddhist Chanting Association was the starting point of Venerable Master's endeavor in education. The posters and murals inside the kindergarten were designed by artistically skilled youth group member Chou Kuang-you. Venerable Master also introduced the Early Childhood Teacher's Training Program which attracted several hundred teachers and later became the hub of teachers for kindergartens in Taiwan. The program became the cause for the boom of kindergarten education in Taiwan. In Venerable Master's mind, the most immediate service which Buddhism could offer to help people was education; therefore, he founded Tzu AI Kindergarten in 1956. In August, 1957, the kindergarten was inaugurated. The Board appointed Venerable Master as Chairperson, and hired Miss Chang Yu-li (Venerable Tzu Hui) as the first ever Chief, and Lin Tzu-song, Wu Su-jen (Venerable Tzu Jung), and Yang Tzu-man as teachers. Classes commenced on September 4th with over 170 students. The kindergarten was originally located at the North Gate of Yilan. In order to provide better access to the children, in less than 6 month's time of her founding, another campus was established inside the Lin Family Ancestral Temple near the South Gate where Wu Su-jen (Venerable Tzu Jung) took up the role of Principal. Not long after, the Suao Plant of Taiwan Cement Corporation also expressed their wish to establish a kindergarten. Venerable Tzu Jung was Invited to become Principal and Miss Chang Tzu-lien as Chief Throughout the 12 years of Venerable Master's residence in Yilan, the kindergarten recruited over a hundred students annually.
