In 1949, amidst theChinese civil war, Venerable Master Hsing Yun led the Monastic Rescue Team to Taiwan. A stranger in a foreign land,he never complained about the hardships he faced. In 1950, he took lodging at Yuan Guang Temple in Zhongli. To repay Venerable Master Miao Guo's kindness, he drew 600 pails of well-water and prepared breakfast for 80 people daily. Despite his chores, he continued to study, teach, and write, completing the book Singing in Silence during the three-month period that he spent tending to thewoods. He later served as editor of Human Life, Awakening Life, and Awakening the World magazines. Venerable Master firmly believes that in a time when Buddhism is in decline, culture and education are crucial to the successful promotion of Buddhism.
Singing in Silence
While staying at Yuanguang Temple in Chungli, in addition to devoting himself to his duties. Venerable Master never stopped reading and writing. Once, after he received twenty three dollars for a Dharma service, he immediately went to buy paper and pens.The joy and satisfaction he experienced is unforgettable. When the abbot, Venerable Master Miao Guo, sent him to tend to the woods near Fayun Temple in Miaoli for three
months, he wrote incessantly and completed the book Singing in Silence.
In 1951, when Venerable Ta Hsing founded the Taiwan Buddhist Seminar at Ling Yin
Temple near Ching-Tsao Lake in Hsinchu, he invited Venerable Master to take on the position of Dean. During this period, Venerable Master translated a Japanese Buddhist dictionary into Chinese and published the Chinese version of the "Discourse on the Universal Gate Chapter of Kuan Yin Bodhisattva."
