Qixia Temple

Meeting Venerable Master Zhi Kai In 1937, which is the year that the Second Sino-Japanese War erupted from the Marco Polo Bridge Incident. Venerable Master's father disappeared after he left for a business trip.Two years later, when he was twelve, his mother decided to take him with her to Narjing in search of his father. By chance, they came across one of the receptionists at Qixia Temple, who casually asked the child if he was willing to become a Buddhist monk. Venerable Master instinctively replied,"I'm willing." Within half an hour, Venerable Master Zhi Kai, the abbot of Qixia Temple, sent someone to ask the child, "I have heard that you want to become a Buddhist monk. How about I be your master?" Venerable Master said, "OK!" His mother immediately said, "No! How can I face my family when I go home?" Upon hearing this, Venerable Master started tearing, and said, "I have already given my word, I must keep my promise!" This is a promise that he has kept his entire life. Half a Bowl of Pickled Vegetables Venerable Master Hsing Yun is Venerable Master Zhi Kai's only disciple, and his master was always extremely strict with him. When he was seventeen, he contracted malaria and was bed-ridden for over half a month suffering with fevers and chills every day.He thought " I'm afraid I'm going to die" Later, when Venerable Master Zhi Kai received news that his disciple was sick, he sent him half a bowl of pickled vegetables. During a time when material goods were lacking, this was a rare luxury! Venerable Master ate the pickled vegetables holding back tears and vowed to dedicate his life to Buddhism in order to repay his master's kindness.
