Fo Guang Shan Chronology

Located at the front to the right of the Main Hall's first floor, the“Historical Museum of Fo Guang Shan" employs easily-understandable video narratives and displays documents and artifacts to give a smooth and fluid presentation of the development of Venerable Master Hsing Yun's thoughts.

At the entrance, there is a screen introducing different comments from celebrities who had once visited the Buddha Museum. The brief introduction of Fo Guang Shan entitled“Thousand-Year Lineage, Fo Guang Inheritance" states:

"Fo Guang Shan upholds the branch of the Linji Chan School, of which Venerable Master  Hsing Yun is the 48th lineage holder. He came to Taiwan in 1949, and started promoting Buddhism at Yilan's Lei Yin Temple, which would become the cradle of Buddhism in Taiwan. Since the founding of Fo Guang Shan in 1967, he has advocated Humanistic Buddhism. Transcending national boundaries and traveling the world, he has brought Buddhism from the mountain to the homes of society; allowing for the continued spread of the benefits and joys of Buddhism.”

In the winter of 1952,Venerable Master Hsing Yun went to Lei Yin Temple in Yilan to teach the Universal Gate Chapter of the Lotus Sutra for 20 days, and settled down in Yilan after his lectures were warmly received. Starting in 1953, Venerable Master held regular Dharma talks and chanting services to promote group practice. To attract youth, he formed a Buddhist choir and went to the countryside to propagate the Dharma. His use of singing and slideshows was the start of the use of modern methods to propagate the Dharma. In 1955, he reconstructed Lei Yin
Temple, and formed the Tripitaka Reprinting Committee Tour, which led youths on an island-wide Dharma propagation tour. In 1956, he founded Tzu Ai Kindergarten, promoted celebrations of the Triple Gem Festivals, adulthood ceremonies, Buddhist weddings, and family blessing visits, all of which were practiced for the first time in Buddhism.
