In 1952, during the first meeting of the Buddhist Association, R.O.C, Venerable Master Hsing Yun was invited by the lay devotee Mr. Lee Chueh-he to teach Buddhism in Yilan. This marked the beginning of Venerable Master's presence in Yilan's history books. In 1953, he became the abbot of Lei Yin Temple, which is located at Beimen (northen gate), Yilan. At the time, those who did not know his name addressed him as the "Master of Beimen."
Upon arrival at Lei Yin Temple, he established the Buddhist Chanting Association, which caused the number of devotees to increase by the day. He started giving talks on sutras and established Taiwan's first Buddhist choir. To plant the seeds of Buddhism among the young, he established children's classes and founded Ci Ai Kindergarten. He also initiated a Sunday school, student associations, youth groups, a women's group, and Dharma propagation teams. Additionally, Venerable Master frequented prisons, army camps, factories, radio stations, schools, and the countryside to propagate the Dharma, spreading the seeds of Buddhism among all levels of society.
