During his days at Lei Ying Temple in Yilan,Venerable Master organized the Amitabha Chanting Retreat annually. In seeing the blank and simple interior of the Buddha shrine, he began to write inspirational phrases about chanting Buddha's name, and posted them on
the walls. This became the cause for him to write calligraphy. Having dedicated his time to Dharma propagation for over half a century, Venerable Master has adopted different cultural and educational approaches, remaining open to any suitable methods that could inspire people, where calligraphy was one of such. The reason that Fo Guang Shan was able to establish more than two hundred branch temples and universities across the world was exactly because of the calligraphy pieces Venerable Master had written for his devotees.
