Challenged by climate change and environmental imbalance, humanity is now facing nature’s mightiest backlash. As the environmental issues stem from human activities, it is now up to humanity to propose solutions. Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute, having long concerned about environment and land, has developed programs of sustainable craft practices that center on local materials. Parallel to the “2026 Taiwan Craft Festival,” the Institute is implementing carbon accounting standards throughout the “exhibition lifecycle” and constructing a blueprint for Taiwan’s craft ecosystem. We aim to lead everyone in boarding the ESG virtuous cycle train to do its part as a corporate in safeguarding the lifeline of sustainable social and environmental development.
As part of the “2026 Taiwan Craft Festival” series of events, the “Embracing Art for Carbon Tracing—an Event of Low-Carbon Aesthetics by Taiwanese Craft” has a central metaphor of an “Open lake of crafts”, symbolizing that crafts are a living system with constant flow and endless cycles instead of static collections. The exhibition integrates UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the spirit of corporate ESG to construct a framework virtuous craft cycles known as “SLOHAS”. Craft enthusiasts are invites to join us in rethinking the entire life cycle of craft works from sources of material, production processes to waste disposal, by way of six key dimensions, namely, “Simplicity, Living, Originality, Health, Aesthetics, and Sustainability”, to realize a way of living that is “just right”.
The highlight of the exhibition is the in-depth dialogue between technology and humanity. When AI (Artificial Intelligence) meets HI (Human Intelligence), Craft 4.0 reveals astonishing possibilities: AI deals with precise carbon reduction data and efficiency improvements, while HI safeguards value judgments and the warmth of human sensibility. Such fusion of digital manufacturing and traditional wisdom precisely minimizes waste of materials, allowing technological efficiency and humanistic warmth to coexist harmoniously in the low-carbon era.
