Hu Shih Memorial Hall and Hu Shih Cemetery

Erh-Pan Kao

Hu Shih Memorial Hall (Former Residence 1958 and Exhibition Hall 1965): Commissioned personally by President Chiang Kai-shek to welcome Hu Shih, it was planned and designed by Mr. Chun-yang You of Kwan, Chu and Yang Architects. This small but beautiful house, connected to an exterior lawn courtyard, evokes the feeling of an American country home. Due to the constant stream of visitors, Mr. Hu Shih converted the rear terrace into a reception room. The Hu Shih Memorial Hall was added after Hu Shih's death, using the same materials as the former residence—primarily fair-faced red brick and white cement decorative tiles. However, the overall design changed from the former residence’s hip roof to a flat roof, reflecting a more modern approach. The overall style retains elements of Brutalism. Two white gutters on the north side project above the roofline, creating a light and lively rhythm. Hu Shih Cemetery (1963): Designed by Erh-Pan Kao, it differs from traditional cemetery forms by featuring an elegant fair-faced concrete corridor enclosure supported by single columns, allowing people to stroll within, reflecting Hu Shih's advocacy of modern liberal spiritual principles.
