歐美研究所研究大樓Building of Institute of European and American Studies

1972年王秋華設計歐美研究所圖書館，原為禮堂、書庫、及研究室。1988年李灼明接下歐美研究所研究大樓的設計工作，同時間亦有歷史語言研究所研究大樓設計工作進行，兩棟建物均延續歐美所圖書館及歷史文物陳列館，紅磚與混凝土搭配的顏色與質感，並以合院的形式，各與原棟相互調和。
空間配置上，設計以中庭作為新舊棟之間的過渡節點，既延伸了原有空間的秩序，也建立了新的動線關係。增建量體採用錯落、圍合的布局策略，讓新建築與舊建築彼此對話、互相依存，形成一種「共生式」的空間關係。這種設計不僅滿足了功能需求，更讓建築之間的關係從單純的並置，昇華為一種能「呼吸」的共構關係。
In 1972, architect Chiu-Hwa Wang designed the library for the Institute of Western Languages and Cultures, originally housing an auditorium, stacks, and research rooms. In 1988, architect Li Zhuoming took over the design of the Institute’s new research building. Since Li was simultaneously working on the research building for the Institute of History and Philology, both new structures continued the red brick and concrete color and texture established by the Western Languages Library and the Historical and Cultural Exhibition Hall. Designed in a courtyard layout, each building harmonizes with its original counterpart.
In terms of spatial layout, the design uses a central courtyard as a transitional node between the old and new wings, extending the original spatial order while establishing new circulation patterns. The addition employs a staggered, enclosing arrangement, allowing the new and old buildings to engage in dialogue and interdependence, forming a “symbiotic” spatial relationship. This approach not only meets functional needs but elevates the relationship between the buildings from mere juxtaposition to a co-constructed space that can “breathe.”
