Taoxi Craft is a Hualien-based brand that mixes the mediums of ceramics and pewter, focusing on the connections between nature, people, and the land. Developing inspiration from everyday life, we create functional yet beautiful objects, transforming craftsmanship into a scenic element of daily life—one that can be used and deeply appreciated.
What do you hope audiences will feel in front of the work, or what questions do you hope they will leave the exhibition with?
Feast of Nature, I hope viewers sense the anticipation of a shared meal about to begin. Along an extended table, ceramics drawn from the land, tin expressing natural textures, and woven forms inspired by the mountains and streams of the valley come together in a quiet yet theatrical composition. I hope viewers ask: In today’s fast-paced digital world, how might we redefine the vitality of everyday objects? When we use an object carrying memories of Hualien’s land and geological time, can it also renew our sense of respect for nature and life?
Why did you choose craft and handmaking techniques to address this issue, rather than other forms of artistic expression?
Craft offers a sense of “materiality” and “physical presence” that installation art or digital media cannot replace. Ceramics extend directly from the land of the valley, carrying memories of Hualien’s geology and environment; tin records the maker’s bodily rhythm through its soft sheen and hammered surface; and weaving accumulates time through handwork, evoking the valley’s mountains and streams. Unlike purely visual forms of art, craft can be touched, used, and worn over time. By entering everyday life, it becomes a powerful medium for carrying Hualien’s local memory and contemporary cultural thought.
As traditional culture, local memories, or environmental issues fade, what role can art and craft play?
Art and craft can serve as “contemporary cultural translators” and “carriers of everyday memory.” By combining contemporary visual language with ceramics, tin, and weaving, traditional techniques can be transformed into objects suited to modern life. Craft should not remain a museum specimen, but return to the everyday table. Feast of Nature, each object becomes a form of micro-localism, allowing people to reconnect with Hualien’s land, memory, and natural environment through touch and use.
How do these craft-based processes respond to the cultural memory and ecological perspectives explored in the work?
The greatest challenge lies in combining different materials while balancing their physical limits and structural precision. Ceramics, tin, and weaving have very different properties, yet they must work together visually and structurally. This requires a deep understanding of materials, muscle memory developed through years of making, and careful control of overall proportion and aesthetics.
How can the general public support the development of craft culture in everyday life?
There are several ways to support craft culture in daily life: (1) develop a more sustainable relationship with objects by choosing durable, locally made craft over disposable or mass-produced goods; (2) take part in local craft experiences to understand the time, processes, and skills behind each work; and (3) support Hualien’s local craftspeople and traditional techniques so that the region’s craft ecosystem can continue to grow and evolve.
