Rag Weaving: A Sustainable Redesign of Cultural Craftmanship

Juby Chiu

Juby Chiu takes the “rag weaving” as the core, transforming discarded clothing and waste fibers into new, handcrafted creations through a process of tearing, reorganization and weaving. Rag tearing is an ancient craft that breathes new life into what we once considered waste. This project started by gathering vintage clothing from local communities, the sorts, cleans and redesigns the fabrics to explore their expressive potential through processing to creative interpretation. In workshops, participants are encouraged to share stories about their old clothes, which serve as inspiration of new creations. A shirt bearing significant personal meanings may be transformed into a brooch or an accessory, while fabric exhibiting signs of age and wear may be woven into a new object. The colors, fibers and traces of use develop into a distinctive design language. Each completed piece not only embodies a renewed cultural expression but also preserves emotional resonance and personal history. By partnering with artisans and designers, the project transforms rag weaving into a versatile realm of applications, including fashion, large scale installations, and functional craft objects. The team also explores modular design systems to facilitate the replication and transmission of the craft, helping to promote commercialization and collaboration across different fields. Educational outreach is the project’s second focus. Workshops and exhibitions facilitate hands-on learning about textile circularity, with artistic displays highlighting fabric stories, while markets help to translate the concept into daily lifestyle decisions. Rag weaving goes beyond simple reuse; it reorganizes discarded fabrics into evident connections, allowing the origins and memories of each piece to be recognized anew. Prolonging the fabrics lifecycle and paving the way for a revitalized future.
