"Made in Taiwan" brand from Hualien, this infuses a distinctive natural aesthetic into a variety of home goods through the use of marble and exquisite craftsmanship. What do you see as the greatest advantages and challenges of creating with locally sourced stone from Hualien? The greatest advantage is that Hualien itself is home to abundant, high-quality stone resources. Each type of stone found in Hualien has its own distinctive characteristics. For example, the veining and texture of Heping White Marble closely resemble Italy’s Carrara marble, while serpentine is a stone unique to eastern Taiwan, with a strong local identity and distinctive appeal. These qualities also give us greater room for creative exploration. The challenge comes from the uniqueness of natural stone. Every piece differs in its veining, hardness, and structure, so the fabrication process must be adjusted according to the characteristics of each stone, relying heavily on the craftsperson’s experience and judgment. As a result, every piece requires more time and effort, but this is also what gives each work its one-of-a-kind value. What kind of Hualien do you hope audiences will come to know through your works? Beyond Hualien’s beautiful mountain and ocean scenery, we hope people can also discover its rich stone culture and deep-rooted craft traditions. Hualien is not only a destination for tourism; it is also home to many craftspeople and industries that have quietly devoted themselves to their work over the years. Through our works, we hope people can take home a memory of Hualien and allow its stories to continue being passed on through everyday life. Which stage of the creative or production process places the greatest demand on a craftsperson’s experience? The stage that places the greatest demand on a craftsperson’s experience is the detailed finishing and polishing of the product. Each piece of stone differs slightly in its crystalline structure and hardness, so achieving the right level of refinement requires years of accumulated experience and a highly developed sense of touch. At the same time, during mass production, it is necessary to maintain as much consistency as possible across individual pieces, which is also a significant test of both technical skill and experience. The brand emphasizes the idea of “transforming ancient stone into everyday objects that carry time and culture.” What does this statement mean to the brand? Stone is formed over millions of years and is itself a work shaped by time. Through design and craftsmanship, we hope to allow this treasure from nature to move beyond simply being displayed and instead become truly integrated into everyday life. When people use these stone objects each day, they are no longer merely “objects,” but become vessels that carry memories of daily life, local culture, and the “stories” of Hualien and its land, allowing the value of time to continue being passed on. For people encountering Taiwanese marble for the first time, which work would you most recommend as a starting point? We would recommend beginning with the “Mountain Landscape Incense and Candle Holder.” Its form is inspired by Hualien’s Qingshui Cliffs, incorporating the layered forms of the natural mountain landscape and the stone’s natural veining into everyday life. It can be used not only as an incense holder but also to hold a small candle, allowing light and shadow to reveal the different textures of the stone. When not in use, it can also serve as a decorative object for the home, bringing the natural beauty of Taiwanese marble into everyday living spaces.
