Young people need to be skilled to be able to apply what is learned Buddhism in life. Development of monastic education at Fo Guang Shan has been uninterrupted in the last 50 years. Since founding Shou Shan Buddhist College and Eastern Buddhist College, Tsung Lin University, Institute of Chinese Buddhist Studies as well as Buddhist College for Novice Monks have also been established. Monastic education has also expanded beyond Kaohsiung. A total of 16 Buddhist College have been built all over Taiwan include Taipei Women's Buddhist College, Keelung Women's Buddhist College, Changhua Fushan Buddhist College. Chiayi Yuonfu Buddhist College, and Pingtung Buddhist College. Buddrist colleges have also been set up overseas, such as Indio Buddhist College. Hong Kong Buddhist College. Dong Zen Buddhist College Malaysia, Nan Tien Buddhist College in Australia, Hsi Lal Budahist College in the USA, Zu Lal Buddhist College in Brazil, the English Buctahist College, the Japanese Buddhist College. the South Africa Buddhist Seminary as well as the TV Buddhist College and Tienyen Buddhist eCollege. Philanthropic works have always been important over the past 50 years. Its history dates back to the founding of the Charity Hall at Shou Shan Temple, which later evolved into the Charity Affairs Department of Fo Guang Shan, and subsequently became the Charity Council that we know today.
Charitable organizations under Fo Guang Shan include: Fo Guang Shan Compassion Foundation, Fo Guang United Clinic, Cloud and water Mobile Clinic, Fo Guang Senior Citizens Home, Fo Guang Shan Longevity Memorial Park, Mental Care Center, Lanyang Ren AI Senior Citizens Home, Da Ci Children's Home, and Da Ci Learning Center. In Brazil, there is the 'Sons of Tathagata' education sponsorship campaign. In Africa and India, Children's Homes are built. In Paraguay, there is a Hospital Los Angeles Paraguay-China, a Social Education Center, a Social Core Service Unit, an Emergency Rescue Team, and a Winter Relief team.The belief ""unconditional love and universal kindness"" becomes a reality amongst the underprivileged, the old , the sick , the poor, and the crisis-affected . Healthy body and contented mind are once again made possible.

A Temple of the Bodhisattva Path, Equal Emphasis on Understanding and Practice
Fo Guang Shan is a temple of the bodhisativa path where equal emphasis is placed on understanding and practices. The creed of Fo Guang members is to give others faith, give others joy, give others hope, and give others convenience."" Fo Guang Shan members practice a personal uptake of precepts and extend the practice to benefiting others, which in effect is the Bodhisattva's way of cultivation. Fo Guang Shan has a long history of holding collective cultivation activities such as meditation, chanting and sutra-copying. Fo Guang Shan advocates a parallel practice of Chan Buddhism and Pureland Buddhism to elevate the strength of the mind for both monastic and lay Buddhists. It set out to introduce the right mentality and right value to society and to purify the mind of everyone. Venerable Master also stresses the significance of ""Practicing the Buddha's Way."" Over the last 40 years, Fo Guang Shan and Buddha's Light International Association have organized a series of mind-purifying activities such as pilgrimages; The Seven Admonitions Oath-Taking Campaign; Love and Compassion Campaign, Return to Buddha's Time Campaign; Chan, Pureland and Tantric Dharma Functions; and Great Compassion Repentance Dharma Services. The Triple Gem Refuge Taking and Five Precepts Ceremonies, Bodhisativa Precepts Ceremonies, and the Water Land Dharma Services are held annually in the northern, central, and southern parts of Taiwan.
