Causes that led to Venerable Master Hsing Yun founding Fo Guang Shan were: 1) Shou Shan Temple could no longer accommodate the growing number of Buddhist College students, and 2) A Vietnamese Chinese couple, Chu Po-si and wife were hit by devastating debt. Out of his trademark compassion. Venerable Master extended a helping hand, salvaging the couple from their desperate financial crisis by buying the land of current Fo Guang Shan off them. On 16th May, 1967, the groundbreaking ceremony for Fo Guang Shan took place, and the journey of monastery construction officially began.

Venerable Master said, ""I named the eight pagodas of the Buddha Memorial Center as “One Teaching Pagoda.” ""Two Assemblies Pagoda,"" Three Goodness Pagoda."" ""Four Givings Pagoda,"" ""Five Harmonies Pagoda,” “Six Perfections Pagoda,” ""Seven Admonishment Pagoda,” and “Eightfold Path Pagoda."" These are the lifeboats far all, “Through understanding and practicing Buddhism, applying these ideas to our daily activity, happiness, contentment and beauty of life blossom.
