In 1953, when Venerable Master first settled in Lei Ying Temple, he spent the first six months sleeping underneath the altar table. After that, a small room near the shrine was finally cleared out to be bedroom for him. Other than an old and worn-out bamboo bed, an old sewing machine was also found inside the room. Venerable Master always slept on the bed with caution, fearing that the squeaking noise made by the bamboo bed when he turned his body would wake up others. Later, he even brought back an abandoned chair from a prison visit in Yilan, and late in the night, when everyone else was asleep, he would pull the hanging light bulb from the Buddha shrine closer to his bedroom door, so he could read and write on the sewing machine under the dim light.
