The Era He Lived in When He Became Renounced

Born in Haian, Jiangsu, Venerable Master Zhi Kal (1911~1979) founded Qixia with College Venerable Da Ben, Venerable Jue Ming, and later became the Abbot of Qixia Monastery. Having only received one disciple in his life, Venerable Master Zhi Kal educated Venerable Master with strict discipline instead of loving-kindness. For example, Venerable Master Zhi Kal never easily granted permission for the young Venerable Master to go home. He wanted to protect young Venerable Master from the world's temptations, which may cause him to lose his determination to cultivate. So, Venerable Master Zhi Kal subjected him to hardship and poverty as a way to train his mind to remain unattached to material desires. Master Zhi Kol later passed away during the Cultural Revolution, and was buried in Haian, Jiangsu.
