Secular Education

To realize the goal of fostering talent through education, Venerable Master Hsing Yun has spent his life tirelessly promoting educational activities. He arrived in Taiwan in 1949, became abbot of Yilan's Lei Yin Temple in 1953, and established the first Buddhist kindergarten - Tzu Ai Kindergarten, in 1956. Presently, the Fo Guang Shan Educational Council oversees the operation of many secular educational institutions, including numerous universities, secondary and eiementary schools, kindergartens, as well as institutions that provide devotees education. From kindergarten through college, during the crucial period of education where one's character is formed, Venerable Master has established educational institutions which provide students not only with cultural and life education, but which also teach students to cultivate a mind of compassion develop a sense of gratitude, appreciate their good fortune, and be willing to generate good affinities. Shining Across the Five Continents - Secular Education University of the West (United States) Fo Guang University Nanhua University Nan Tien Institute (Australia) Promoting Devotee Education to Create a Harmonious Society Since its founding, Fo Guang Shan has continuously developed the field of education. Providing devotees with guidance towards proper belief and providing members of society with the path to learning, Fo Guang Shan promotes devotee education to create a harmonious society. Devotees education is a necessary link in the propagation of Buddhism. In order to help devotees in their cultivation of Buddhism according to individual needs, the educational endeavors promoted by Fo Guang Shan and its branch temples throughout Taiwan and overseas include: Buddhist Schools in various locations, FGS Srimala Buddhist Institute, FGS TV Buddhist Education,Buddha's Light Open University, and the FGS Buddhist eCollege.
