“Leaving blank” is a much captivating feature of Chinese calligraphy and ink wash painting. Likewise, instead of the traditional method of splitting bamboo tubes from the center, the bamboo is split from both sides of the center, creating the unique effect characteristic of bamboo. By means of such special cutting method, which involves changing direction midway, the work expresses a transition from the full and solid steady quality to the light, airy quality like “Leaving blank”.
