(Organ)

The Taiwan Theological College and Seminary (TTCS) Chapel Organ is one of the most representative church pipe organs in Taiwan, embodying a union of sacred musical ritual and mechanical aesthetics, and symbolizing the synthesis of sacred music and architectural acoustics. The chapel itself follows the basilica-style rectangular plan. The central nave is clearly aligned along the longitudinal axis of the space, with the pipe organ situated on the second-floor gallery, extending this axis directly toward the altar cross at the opposite end—together defining the axial space of the Christian church. This organ was built in 1895 by George Kilgen & Son in Missouri, USA. It was originally housed in the First Presbyterian Church of Memphis. Through the introduction of American Presbyterian missionary Rev. Smathers, the instrument was transported to Taiwan in 1977, and inaugurated at the TTCS anniversary celebration in 1978. At the time, it stood as one of the foremost church instruments in Taiwan. Though the chapel’s form recalls wooden East Asian structures, its use of reinforced concrete results in a spacious ceiling without sloping supports. The organ stands fully visible on the open second floor, allowing its music to resonate freely throughout the space. •Console: 2 manuals / 1 pedalboard •Builder: George Kilgen & Son •Number of pipes: 1,005 •Number of stops: 16 •Special effect stops: 1 •Year of Purchase: 1977
