Island within Island

Christopher kelsall Island within Island Angus Shuenn-Ren Liou / Professor at the Department of Architecture, National Cheng Kung University; Director of the C-Cube Lab Taiwan is an island with limited natural resources, reliant on imported materials and energy. In the face of increasing environmental pressures, reducing waste and promoting material circulation is no longer optional—it is an urgent necessity. At the same time, to make better use of local resources, highlight regional characteristics, and reduce carbon emissions from transportation, Taiwan must establish regional circular systems. These systems—extending from material extraction to design, production, use, and recycling—form a quasi-island model of closed-loop circulation. Across Taiwan, diverse ecosystems and industries provide fertile ground for developing innovative, region-specific material loops. Each region holds the potential to become a distinctive ‘island’ of circular innovation. Combined, these micro-islands form the essential foundation for a truly sustainable island-wide future. The “Island within Island” exhibition features over twenty works of varying scale—like a constellation of floating islands—each revealing a story of material, place, and purpose. At its core, the central platform serves as the ‘main island,’ presenting the C-Cube Lab’s recent innovations in local circular materials. Among them is the debut of CSBB (C-Slurry Bamboo Biochar), a new craft material developed from bamboo industry waste. CSBB is produced by transforming bamboo residue into biochar through low-temperature pyrolysis, then combining it with C-Cube’s signature circular slurry, C-Slurry. The result is a carbon-sequestering, humidity-regulating, and mold-resistant material designed for creative reuse. At the heart of the platform, “Bambloom”—along with three companion pieces created by the C-Cube Lab and the studios Dishan, TaG Living, and AKAMU—demonstrates the potential of CSBB in contemporary craft. These island materials—humble yet beautiful—have long sustained daily life across Taiwan. But as industries and society shift, these once-valuable resources—bamboo in Nantou, coral sand in Penghu, oyster shells in Tainan, glass in Hsinchu, and serpentine stone in Hualien—are increasingly treated as waste. “Island within Island” is both a reflection and a call to action in the face of Taiwan’s environmental transformation. It invites scientists and designers to collaborate in building a material circulation system for the island—reclaiming the essence of regional materials and developing upcycled craft media. Through innovative design and production, this project seeks to reimagine how we relate to materials—and reshape the way we live into a more sustainable future.
