The Highest Virtue is Like Water–A Collaborative Learning Project on Batik Interpretation

More Than Craft Prologue Installation Beginning with the concept of “water,” this installation traces the life cycle of craft rooted in the land. From the underground spring water, representing the pure and local origins of craft, the flow gradually transforms into “living water” as it enters the contemporary world. Here, tradition and modernity converge, forming new rhythms and expressions. Eventually, the flowing water gathers into a calm “lake,” returning to everyday life and becoming part of daily existence. This installation specially invited artist Ching-Lin Chen to create the work. Indigo dyeing was chosen because it embodies the craftsmanship of water itself. Between indigo and textile, movement is preserved and time is slowly layered into the fabric. The gradations of blue flow through the suspended textiles within the space, creating a water-like sense of movement while revealing the depth and presence of craft. The work was also created collaboratively with students guided by Ching-Lin Chen, transforming the process of craft transmission into a collective “living water lake.” This spirit of shared creation and continuity is the essence of craftsmanship that the installation seeks to express. Installation Title: "The Highest Virtue is Like Water" – A Collaborative Learning Project on Batik Interpretation Instructors: Ching-lin CHEN, Yu-xiu MA Participants: Si-rui CHEN, Pei-qi WANG, Zhi-cheng XIAO, Meng-jun LIN, Xin-yi LIN, Ya-yan ZHANG, Jin-yi CHEN, Yu-zi LIN, Qian-wen HUANG, Jia-xuan SUN Creative Description: This project is a continuation of the "Nantou County Natural Dyeing Workshop Project." Instructor Ching-lin CHEN is a recipient of the 2024 National Craft Achievement Award, and together with his wife, Yu-xiu MA, serves as a preserver of Nantou County’s natural dyeing techniques. To promote the inheritance and development of dyeing craftsmanship, the organizers selected 10 outstanding young students from across Taiwan for a three-year training program in natural dyeing techniques. This is the second year of the program, exploring the various forms of water under the theme of "Water-based Batik." From ripples, waves, rivers, and ocean tides to clouds and mist in the atmosphere, the project investigates brushwork and pattern formation through a spirit of collaborative learning, presenting the evolving visual dialogue between teachers and students. By combining the theme of “water-based” with the structure of language, the work transforms the process from characters and phrases into sentences, evolving into diverse visual expressions. Through the interplay of wax and dye, the installation reveals a flowing narrative of collaboration and collective creation.
