A Travel Guide from 1940

Long before the internet, updated travel guides were essential references for travelers. During Japanese colonial period, the Taiwan Railways Travel Guide was one such important resource, with new editions published regularly. It offered detailed descriptions of the attractions around each railway station. The 1940 edition highlighted the scenery surrounding Songshan Station and the newly completed Songshan Tobacco Factory, stating: The Songshan Station is the eastern gateway to Taipei City. The southern half of the area is hilly, while its northern half lies in the Keelung River basin. It is a vast, fertile land with a population of 16,000. An industrial area in the greater Taipei, its various industries are extremely prosperous. Surrounding the area is a large railway workshop, the state Monopoly Bureau's tobacco factory, and Taiwan's only ironworks.
