Upside Down

National Living Treasure

Derived from the door gods in Chinese legends, who guard gates to deter ghosts from invading, the earliest recorded door gods are Shen Shu and Yu Lu. There are many types of door gods, such as the Four Heavenly Kings or Vajra statues, civil servants, palace maids, and more. The style of the door god is determined by the main deity enshrined in the temple. Temples with dragons as door gods are dedicated to deities like the Jade Emperor or the Xuantian Virgin. For this piece, Mr. Zhuang uses dragons as the theme, aiming to present upside-down imagery.
