Biomimicry Aesthetics: Robotic Calligraphy of "Sensitive Floral"

Chih-Chieh Huang & Biodesign Lab, National Tsing Hua University

Collaboration on robotic arm technology with Associate Professor Shih‑Yuan Wang at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University 《Biomimicry Aesthetics: Robotic Calligraphy of "Sensitive Floral"》是一項結合生成藝術(Generative Art)與生物模仿(Biomimicry)的跨領域科技藝術創作。 This interdisciplinary techno-art project merges generative art and biomimicry to explore the expressive potential of artificial systems inspired by living organisms. Drawing inspiration from the responsive movement of Mimosa pudica (sensitive plant), the work constructs a real-time interactive generative system based on fractal tree structures and cellular automata. Rooted in recursive mathematics and grid computation, the system visualizes adaptive dynamics and collective behaviors observed in nature. Viewers trigger cascading reactions within the virtual tree structure through tactile interaction, simulating the touch-sensitive response of Mimosa leaves and creating an immersive participatory experience. Building upon this, the project further translates the generative data into visualized and materialized expressions. Through robotic path planning and custom calligraphic interpretations, the branching forms and textures of the tree are rendered with varied ink gestures. What once existed only as virtual pixels is now transformed into tangible traces—experimenting with how brushstroke, motion, and ink diffusion behave in the physical world. This work was awarded the Award for Excellence in Interactive Art at the 2024 Asia Digital Art Award Fukuoka (ADAA), and was exhibited at the Fukuoka Art Museum from March 4–9, 2025.
