Concrete Lacquerware Series

Lai Hsin-You

"The identity of an artisan has taken me to places I have never been before. This process has made me realize that Taiwan is truly a place worthy of admiration." During his Kintsugi (a Japanese art that fixes broken pottery with lacquer and metal powder) teaching process, Lai Hsin-Yo noticed that every time he mixed the repair paste, a considerable amount of leftover material would accumulate. He stated that these remnants were originally of little use, but he decided to make use of these "nonsense little piles of paste" by molding them into various shapes, eventually accumulating a significant amount. On one occasion, a student saw these piles and suggested selling them, which prompted Lai to think about how to transform these seemingly useless piles into functional and systematic products. In this process, Lai also interacted with residents from other areas, exploring the potential of local materials. For example, during a teaching session in Taoyuan, he came into contact with the sediment from the Shimen Reservoir, which he mixed with local ceramic materials to create the "Concrete Lacquerware" series. These works combine waste materials, local resources, and traditional craftsmanship, opening up a sustainable and innovative direction for the craft. "Finding the Heart through Objectst" is the core belief passed down through three generations of Kaosan Craft, showcasing the profound connection between the maker and the user of crafted pieces. Since its establishment in 1946, Kaosan Craft has promoted lacquer craftsmanship from a folk-art perspective, focusing on developing practical and everyday lacquerware. Through meticulously crafted pieces, users can feel the warmth and beauty of the craftsmanship, fostering an appreciation for every creation. On the foundation of this legacy, third-generation successor Lai Hsin-You introduced the philosophy of "Returning to the Essence of Lacquer." By merging traditional techniques with modern technology, he reinterprets the value of lacquerware through intricate processes. Breaking away from conventional frameworks, he focuses on creating functional objects that fit into everyday life, transforming lacquerware from a symbol of traditional craftsmanship into an integral part of modern living. Through this blend of heritage and innovation, Kaosan Craft ensures that the beauty of lacquer artistry continues to shine and flourish in daily life. This unique aesthetic is exemplified in the True Origin series.
