Insect Specimens

Wang Ho-Hsuan

"Each wool felt specimen represents a story, with the hunting head series possibly being larger events, while the insect series represents smaller moments in memory." In her daily creations, Wang Ho-Hsuan closely links technique and emotion, a feature most evident in her insect specimen works, which reflect her keen observations of the natural environment. Before working on insect specimens, Wang had created many large-scale works using wool felt, most notably the "Hunting Heads" specimen series. These works include head specimens of animals such as elephants, giraffes, and sharks, each not only showcasing exquisite technique but also rich in storytelling and symbolic significance. In her insect specimen series, Wang sees each insect as a carrier of a memory. These delicate insect creations convey the fragmented stories of their brief existence. Whether through the shape of the insect or the symbolism they carry, they quietly convey deep emotions and reflections. Through these specimens, Wang materializes her daily observations and feelings, sparking respect and reflection on life, time, and nature. Felt artist Ho-Hsuan Wang grew up playing in the fields, surrounded by insects and plants. These natural elements have become an essential source of inspiration for her creative work. Her pieces often depict animals, insects, and even mountain landscapes, all rendered with intricate detail and a warm, delicate touch. Ho-Hsuan Wang excels in using wool felting techniques to bring various flora and fauna to life. From large-scale animal hunting trophies to intricate insect specimens, each creation reflects her keen eyes for detail and deep passion for her craft. Her works not only highlight the beauty of nature but also evoke a subtle emotional resonance. Rather than presenting cold, clinical specimens, she seeks to offer a more diverse and emotionally rich perspective on life. In her latest endeavor, she has photographed her wool-felt insect specimens and compiled them into a catalog Insects Illustrated Book / Wool Felt Collection, creating a published collection of her work. Through this project, she hopes to provide wool-felting enthusiasts and insect lovers alike with the opportunity to appreciate her art in a new and intimate way.
