馬水龍(1939.07.17- 2015.5.2)，出生於基隆，是臺灣當代重要作曲家。他獲獎無數，有金曲獎特別貢獻獎、吳三連文藝創作獎、國家文藝獎、行政院文化獎、總統府二等景星勳章等。他的音樂作品風格獨特，巧妙融合臺灣本土元素與西方現代作曲技法，代表作包括《雨港素描》、《廖添丁》舞劇音樂、《梆笛協奏曲》、《琵琶與弦樂四重奏》《無形的神殿》等。其作品曾於世界二十多個國家和地區演出，獲得高度評價。馬水龍在創作高峰之際投入藝術教育，擔任教育行政主管十三年中，全心全意地投入，並有重大貢獻，例如在高教體制中，推動藝術家得以用作品或表演成就升等，民間傑出藝人得以用專技人員資格到大學任教等。他是唯一當過大學校長的作曲家，也是唯一獲得三個國立大學(臺南大學、臺灣大學、臺北藝術大學)頒贈榮譽博士頭銜的作曲家；他並將在民間獲得的資源，創辦「春秋樂集」系列音樂會(邱再興文教基金會贊助)，激發國人的音樂創作能量；他的藝術成就開創了本國音樂史上的佳績，他也努力推展文化藝術外交，讓世界看見臺灣，是最值得推崇的典範音樂家之一。 Ma Shui-Long (July 17, 1939 – May 2, 2015) was a pivotal figure in contemporary Taiwanese music, born in Keelung, Taiwan. Celebrated for his distinctive compositional style that seamlessly integrates Taiwanese cultural elements with Western modernist techniques, Ma received numerous prestigious honors during his lifetime, including the Special Contribution Award at the Golden Melody Awards, the Wu San-Lien Art Award, the National Award for Arts, the National Cultural Award from the Executive Yuan, and the Order of Brilliant Star (Second Class) from the Office of the President. His acclaimed works—A Sketch of the Rainy Harbor, the dance drama Liao Tian-Ding, Concerto for Bamboo Flute and Orchestra, For Pipa and String Quartet, and The Invisible Temple—have been performed in over twenty countries and regions worldwide, earning widespread critical acclaim. At the height of his creative career, Ma devoted himself wholeheartedly to arts education and administration. Over thirteen years of academic leadership, he made enduring contributions to Taiwan’s higher education system: advocating for the recognition of artistic performance and creative works as valid credentials for academic promotion, and enabling outstanding folk artists to be appointed as university faculty under professional technical qualifications. He remains the only composer in Taiwan’s history to have served as a university president and to have been awarded honorary doctorates from three national universities—National University of Tainan, National Taiwan University, and Taipei National University of the Arts. Moreover, he reinvested private resources into the founding of the Spring & Autumn Music Series, sponsored by the Chew’s Culture Foundation, which energized Taiwan’s music creation landscape. Ma Shui-Long’s legacy lies not only in his artistic achievements that reshaped Taiwanese music history, but also in his tireless promotion of cultural diplomacy—bringing Taiwanese music to the global stage. He is remembered as one of the most esteemed and exemplary musicians in the nation’s history.
