Legend has it that the Yami(Tao) people had once mixed flying fish with other seafood and became ill. Thereafter, they no longer ate flying fish. Later, a black-finned flying fish came to the dream of the Yami(Tao) people and told them the proper time and ways to capture and cook flying fish as well as ceremonies to worship them. Since then, the strange sickness no longer happened. Thus they developed a complex system of knowledge and culture around flying fish. They believe that, if they continue to follow the rules and practice the ceremonies, the flying fish will return to Orchid Island every year.
