Daniel Ditlevson

Interlaced 2022 Multi-media sound installation 15’00” The majority of works by American artist Daniel Ditlevson, who has resided in Taiwan for the past two years, begin with sound. A multilayered auditory experience is created for the audience through improvisation and the grouping of sounds emitted by different objects. In the current exhibition, By applying his familiarity with sound creations, Daniel has taken the main thrust of the exhibition regarding textiles, consumerism, and circulation as a point of departure, then proposed an experience of interaction between composite elements such as local exploration, sound editing, and textile installations. He visited various spaces relevant to textiles, including Dahu Elementary School which conducts indigo dyeing workshops, a fabric shop in Beitou, a tailor, a clothing and accessories shop, and a laundromat; and made recordings of various practitioners as they describe their work, as well as of various environmental sounds in their workplaces. He has also collaborated with the Kaulin Foundation REHOW Studio to create a sound absorbing installation onsite using test fabric and recycled textiles. In addition to the auditory sense of sound and the visual sense of the textile installation, the audience can also use a pedal operated sewing machine that has been placed at the site to create sounds in interaction with the work. These auditory experiences allow us to imagine a certain way of life in the neighborhood. The layering of various sensory stimuli in the auditory process allows each audience response to become a part of the creative presentation.
