The Beast

Hung Jui-Liang

Hung Jui-Liang focuses on creative experiments and has carved out his own path in 3D printing. He started exploring this technology in 2011 and, after three years of trial and error, completed his first major work, “The Beast Series”, in 2014. One of his biggest challenges was the lack of resources and knowledge at the time. Even creating an STL file that the 3D printer could read took a lot of effort. Transforming gypsum powder prints into metal works was even harder, involving complex steps like casting, reshaping, and polishing, with each step bringing its own difficulties. Hung Jui-Liang shared that this journey not only helped him learn different 3D printing techniques but also shaped his expertise in digital craftsmanship. Digital technology has made his learning about the tradition much faster, allowing him to create complex works in less time. This also enabled him to meet the needs of various industries, building a creative process that is both flexible and efficient. Hung Jui-Liang has had a strong passion for art since childhood, focusing on the field of Engineering Art. In 2011, he founded Perkūnas Studio to combine 3D printing and engineering techniques, concentrating on the creation of metal casting works. His distinctive artistic style often revolves around contemporary themes and beasts, using metal-crafted "bionic creatures" to convey the profound connection between nature and life. The Beast series in his works not only demonstrates his precise observation of natural forms, but also incorporates mechanical technology, giving the pieces a sense of dynamic while provoking thoughts on the boundaries between machinery and living creatures. Through these works, he questions contemporary society's pursuit of automation and explores the complex relationship between humanity, nature, and technology.
