Around the time she left for France, Lii Jiin Shiow was already actively exploring the relationship among space, figuration, and abstraction on paper, sometimes combining animate and inanimate forms, and sometimes engaging with spatial scale and geometric transformation. Her sketchbooks reveal her captures and explorations ranging from human figures to object imagery. In comparison, this painting, Psychic, focuses on a chair with lines within the blue area extending toward a human-like mass in the background. Both abstract and figurative, the work anticipates Lii’s later approach to pictorial segmentation, emotional expression through objects, and symbolic reflections on selfhood.
