Jo Hsieh

Jo Hsieh said, “The color blue, calm and unassuming, is a rational stance, a mental steadiness, and a spiritual balance.” While exploring the representations and essences of the natural and physical world, she ultimately turned to monochromic and geometric forms to express her own insights and perceptions. Within the blue mineral powder, she distilled a worldview and spiritual clarity. In Hsieh’s work, the labor of creative practice is also the process of discovering and understanding the self. She said, “No one understands what I am saying, except painting.” Painting represents herself, while the blue tones and pure geometry form a universe where she both dwelt and expanded, as well as the “self-portraits” she carefully crafted.
