The oil painting Untitled delineates a beautiful mountain range in the background and a group of dancing figures in the foreground. This painting draws inspiration from the landscapes of Jhuci in Chiayi, where Jo Hsieh’s mother once taught, as well as from her childhood and formative experiences. Created before her transition into abstraction, this is one of Hsieh’s earlier and more figurative landscape paintings. The natural scenery, mountain forms, and cultural imagery illustrated in the work reflect her deep connection to Chiayi. For Hsieh, Chiayi is “a place for returning, healing, painting, and self-discovery.”
