The Jī-lîm (Erhlin) Sugarcane Incident

In 1925, Taiwan Cultural Association member Li Ying-chang took the lead and established the Erhlin Sugarcane Farmer Association and demanded rights from Lin Pen-yuan Sugar Manufacturing Co., Ltd. In October the same year, the company carried out a forced harvest of sugarcane with the assistance of the police, and the entire incident revolted into a conflict where several people were arrested for trial. The incident was followed by a series of social movements, and farmers established unions across Taiwan. Following the lead of figures including Chien Chi, the unions engaged in exchanges with Japanese activists and gradually transformed into movements that appealed for the rights of workers and farmers.
